While many of us make resolutions at the beginning of each year, most of us have already given up before spring arrives. If you want to make 2019 the year of success, here are some tips on how to keep your resolutions.
Focus on One Goal
While you might want to overhaul your life, you will be more successful if you stay focused on one habit at a time. Start small, work your way up to bigger things, and reap the rewards.
Take Baby Steps
Once you have your first goal in mind, break it down into smaller, more manageable steps. For example, if you want to save enough for a down payment on a new car, make a goal to put a certain dollar amount from each paycheck directly into savings.
Talk to friends, family, and coworkers about your resolutions for the year. You will probably find someone with the same goals. You can work together and hold each accountable. This will make it easier to stay focused.
No one is perfect, and we will all make mistakes. If you take a few steps backwards on the way to your goal, don’t give up. Try to figure out what went wrong and keep pressing forward.
Reward Your Progress
Find a way to reward yourself without cutting into your goal — don’t eat a whole plate of cookies if you are trying to lose weight or go on a spending spree while trying to save. Do something that makes you feel good but doesn’t torpedo your progress.
